Ryan played his junior career with the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (2009-2011), leading the team to the WHL Finals in 2011. The left wing registered 13 goals and 15 assists for 28 points in 21 playoff games that season and 65-96-161 in 134 regular season games during his two seasons with the Winterhawks. Drafted 4th overall in the 2010 NHL draft (Blue Jackets) his Portland linemate was Minnesota Wild regular, Nino Niederreiter (5th overall - Islanders - 2010).
